Pristine white beaches, emerald green seas, pockets of exotic rainforest, holiday resorts and duty-free shopping - welcome to a truly fascinating island and home of the 2014 Langkawi Art Biennale, organised by ArtMalaysia Association with the support of the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, coinciding with Visit Malaysia Year 2014.

The island's relaxing and charming qualities attract visitors from far and wide, as well as a number of international events such as Le Tour de Langkawi, LIMA (Langkawi International Maritime and Air Show), The Langkawi International Regatta and the Langkawi Naminara Cultural Festival. So what better place to host the first ever Langkawi Art Biennale than a place like this?

This event will see over 250 local and international artists from 40 countries for 10 days coming together on the island, befitting the theme of this inaugural event: 'Migration'. A theme that represents mobility and the movement of people through borderless boundaries, which will be carried throughout visual art exhibitions, installation art and sculptures. The event seeks to blend art and tourism in Langkawi, elevating it beyond a holiday location into a unique art destination.

Participating artists will be involved in activities that showcase their work while spurring creativity through interactive outdoor installations such as 'scarecrows on the paddy fields' that incorporates local culture with installation art, as well as 'angkat rumah' or 'house moving', an activity that reflects a local way of life during simpler times, where villagers worked together to move whole village houses to a different location.

Another exhibition worth noting is 'Friendship is Forever', celebrating the friendship between Malaysia and China established diplomatically in 1974 by the second Prime Minister of Malaysia, the late Tun Abdul Razak, when he visited Mao Zedong in China; a relationship that is still flourishing after 40 years.

These artists' journey to Langkawi is an act of migration in itself. And it will be a thrill to witness the congregation of artists and the people they bring along with them: their loved ones, families and guests who will be enriched from this event. These artists are truly art tourism ambassadors, who will bring about an exchange of cultures through art, taking the first steps to transform Langkawi into a unique art destination.

We look forward to seeing you at the Langkawi Art Biennale 2014.
