EDDIE LUI

EDDIE LUI FUNG NGAR (aka LV Fengya in Putonghua) was born in 1947 in Hong Kong, where his parents had settled some years earlier. However, while still a toddler, Eddie’s parents took him to their former rural home in Haifeng County, Guangdong Province, where he stayed until 1956 before returning to his place of birth to receive an education.

Growing up in a city where East meets West, Eddie was privileged to witness the sociological changes in Hong Kong and its one-of-a-kind metamorphosis from a light industrial port to a regional manufacturing hub; and then from a busy entrepot to one of the world’s leading financial service centres; and subsequently transforming into a sophisticated metropolis where art and culture could flourish.

In his late teens, having secured his livelihood with a nine-to-five job at a local bank, Eddie pursued his art studies by enrolling in a three-year part-time visual arts programme with the Extramural Studies Department (now SPACE, the School of Professional and Continued Education) at The University of Hong Kong. This uniquely structured institution, under the directorship of Jon A. Prescod (1925– 1994), utilised established artists, art critics and historians whose tutorials helped nurture a new breed of visual artists who became leading practitioners in the Asia Pacific art scene.

Encouraged by his experiences, Eddie chose to spend a further year taking a specialised Sunday programme in contemporary ink art at the same institution. That timely involvement in the developmental path of the contemporary ink movement, pioneered by Hong Kong’s leading ink painters, furnished him with a multifaceted approach towards the realisation of his unique direction in contemporary ink culture.

Eddie’s first one-person ink painting exhibition in 1973 was the catalyst to establishing his artistic career and taking a leading role in developing contemporary art in Hong Kong. That same year he helped set up the Hong Kong Visual Arts Society in partnership with other major players passionately preaching and spreading a unique visual art culture.

So began Eddie’s double-life of banker by day and art promoter and practitioner in every spare moment. His managerial and operations exposure with international financial institutions enhanced his career path and enriched his working life; it had in many ways expanded his vision on the role of art in the nature of life. He currently lives in Hong Kong, practicing visual art, 3-D design and working as a visual art consultant.

His artworks are included in the permanent collection of the Douro Museum, Alijo, Portugal (2022 & 2019); the Diaghilev Museum of Modern Art of the St. Petersburg State University (2019); the International Printmaking Centre of the National Taiwan Normal University (2019); the Muzeul de Arta Cluj-Napoca, Romania (2018); the Xishuangbanna Museum of Ethnology, Jinghong City, Yunnan, China (2018); the Gao Xiaohua Museum of Fine Arts, the Southwest University for Nationalities, Chengdu City, Szechuan, China (2017); Kinmen County Ceramics Factory, Kinmen Islands, Taiwan (2010); Jingdezhen Ceramic Art Museum, Jiangxi Province, China (2004); the Guangdong Museum of Art, Guangzhou, China (2001); Ibrahim Hussein Museum and Cultural Foundation, Langkawi, Malaysia (2000); the Ceramic Art Museum, Foshan, China (2000); Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre, Alberta, Canada (1993); And in Hong Kong, the M+, Hong Kong; The Hong Kong Museum of Art; The Hong Kong Heritage Museum; University Museum and Art Gallery, The University of Hong Kong; Hong Kong Arts Centre; The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts; The MTR Corporation, Hong Kong; the Hong Kong Jockey Club; the Hongkong Land Limited and other cultural bodies and corporations and private collectors.

Artist’s Statement by Eddie Lui

Starting from “Close Encounter with Nature”

從《微觀穹蒼》講起 … 呂豐雅創作⾃⽩

My Work 作品

In my ink painting, I employ various skills of textural treatment as that had been rendered by the literati painters in depicting their spiritual tour of the countryside landscapes. I also have the habit of hammering my ceramic forms with plentiful of handmade physical texture.

Call it a happy coincidence whereby the painter of contemporary subjects and maker of wood-fired ceramic objects are having so much fun in creating negative space and lines from that chunks of dark splash and ink dots; and the painstaking way of coming up with the textural effect on the smooth surface of that big lump of clay.

我的現代⽔墨繪畫引⽤了很多中國⼭⽔畫𥚃的皴法,其構圖效果為我的畫⾯提供了豐富的肌理感覺。

My modern ink painting cites a lot of Chinese mountain water painting 𥚃’s cracking method, and its composition effect provides my picture with a rich sense of texture.

這種從⿊留⽩形成的皴紋與我在柴燒陶塑以⼿打造出來的粗糙質感相互呼應,亦是創作者有幸遊走於⼯藝製作到視藝創作的⼀點喜悅及收穫。

This kind of crackling pattern formed from black and white echoes with the rough texture I created by hand in the firewood pottery sculpture, and it is also a little joy and harvest for the creator who is fortunate to travel from craft production to visual art creation.

DANG TUAN

Human origins and the essence of sexual love has been the main inspiration for my work for years. There is a longing for a time when humans lived in harmony with nature and when they could forget their anxiety about an uncertain contemporary world. This modern life is one in which more technology leads to less love and more discovery leads to more pollution. People become more realistic and less romantic so coming back to their origins becomes a popular aspiration.

Mylene Quito

I consider painting as “Self-discovery”. Every good artist paints what he or she is.  My work very much shows my identity as a mother.

Most artists have one style to be known, but I’m still exploring. My work is indeed, a materialization of my youth, and my earliest ventures into art were inspired by my mother, a tailor who left me at my young age to work in Malaysia. She sent us so many clothes. Woven patterns, pleats, all manners of color— in a very real way, these textiles formed the fabric of my childhood. “It was my coping in a broken family, as well as integrating my experience into art.”

MOTHERS LOVE PATTERN Series 01

Using my own intuition and drive, I’m proudly a self-taught painter. I was a housewife from the start, and I run several small businesses (a store, canteen, salon), but painting was a hobby that developed into my true passion.

I want to contribute to society through passion or talent, I want to create art not just for myself or for fame, but for the new generation. And I hope they’re inspired to help out and pay it forward. My advice to young artists? “Don’t mind age. I started out late Everyone is on their own journey… but while you have a chance – don’t dally”.

PLAYTHING Series 05

Keep going through it— ESPECIALLY when it gets hard. And a special message to girls in the field— “There is a scene for your art, and your gender has nothing to do with it.” Lastly— “Give back! To your community! To the younger ones, the next generation”. Also to teachers – because they hold our youth in their hands… “Except instead of helping kids be safe, I hope my words will help kids to take risks, embrace their art— and let their craft take them places”.

PATTERN Series 07

The black backdrop in my “Belle Fleur” collection symbolizes all the dark times and failures I experienced throughout my art journey. I believe that it’s truly no limit to what a woman can do. My latest “Belle Fleur” series calls for women empowerment. I hope to inspire women to follow their passion, continue to reinvent themselves, and bloom!

https://www.facebook.com/ArtOfMyleneQuito/videos/436297568651848

My signature style of angular fragmented patterns done using precise linear markings and bursting vivid hues depict succinctly the emotional bond that exists between a mother and child. “The radiance of a mother’s love for her child is akin to the life-giving force of the sun. Its warmth envelops her child within a sphere of hope, joy and tranquillity that lasts seemingly for eternity”.

MOTHERS LOVE Series 04

This can be seen from her marvelous creations where the mother and child’s warm embrace can be felt by the viewer. Another aspect I painted, focuses on Mother Nature. Undulating terrain steeped in kaleidoscopic patterns permeate the canvas surface to bring into being the majestic image of a surreal landscape. As the personification of a nurturing force which provides shelter, sustenance and growth, Mother Nature embodies the narrative of rebirth that brings about the promise of a better tomorrow for the future of Mankind and the World.

Every painting in the collection of my flowers symbolizes the diversity of women – soft, sweet, powerful; all silhouetted with golden linings – symbolic of rebirth and indestructibility.  “No matter what a woman’s flaws and imperfections is, we are uniquely beautiful”.

LES BELLE FLEUR Series 19

The Lotus is one of my favorite pieces, a testimony of human resilience and unwavering spirit; also a flower often associated with rebirth and enlightenment. Latched in mud, it submerges in the river and blooms sparkling clean in the morning. Similar to life, we are filled with different problems and anxieties but we will always find a way to rise from one woman in bloom to another.

“Once you become a successful woman, remember to raise others. Start a domino effect through your kindness and always remember to stay grounded.”

Abu Jalal Sarimon

I paint full time. It is a profession that allow me to enjoy my day. Doing daily what I like most, read, research, sketch, paint. When I am immersed in painting it rejuvenates me and never fails to make me feel good.

Painting is a kind of therapy, a form of meditation. With full discipline and deep concentration, I deliver my true potential. I paint to explore and find magical realm of the irresistible. I challenge myself to realise ideas into visuals.

I view painting as a selfless and beautiful act. It is like a spiritual journey, where I am in my own world, yet I am aware of my surrounding. I trust, doing my art at ‘my best’ instead of ‘the best’ and I’d rather compare myself with myself. In that way I won’t let down anybody, or myself.

I am the Founder of Freedom & Love International Art Group, Founding Members of TUJU Art Group, Executive Member of Singapore Modern Art Society, Head of Imago Mundi Singapore and Senior Member of Singapore Malay Artists of Various Resources (APAD).

REAL MAN CRIES

Narrative

I love to explore the richness, joyous and harmonious of colours. I pick human, nature and objects around me as my subject matter that gives freshness and spontaneity to life. I portray colourful perspective to my paintings by applying the vibrant colours, the creative styling, the strong drawing skill with intellectual inclinations yet comical in composition.

TOUCH

The Call of the Mind

My artworks are among the many modes through which I commit “The Call of the Mind” bringing my thoughts and ideas, presented to human cultural sensibility. Characterised by finesse and sense of humour, my creations encourage viewers to evaluate the hidden meanings of each work, behind their seemingly simple yet candid compositions. Always ‘strong in colour’, the nature of my artwork is openly apparent, and I thoroughly composed this mode of expression to create engaging conversation with my viewers.

My medium of choice is acrylics because it is dearer, cleaner and quick drying so I can execute more layers on my canvas. Social Commentary is my genre with Big Nose the signature character putting me on the art map. I paint everything, anything under the sky – people on the move, portrait, landscape, animals, abstract, still life, realism, comic etc.

My artworks have been auctioned by Christie Auction House, Singapore President Charity, Picenum Casa D’Aste & Galleria D’Arte (Italy), UOB Bank Charity Drive and well collected by various Museums, Banks, Hotels, Professionals, Government Agencies and Private Collectors local and overseas.

I love travelling, sketching, reading and writing hence those good habits influence most of my works. I create each artwork as an avenue to share and challenge the viewer’s natural and ideological perceptions of this fast-shaping world. Driven by my sharp observation and conceptual visual expression, my aesthetic variations transform common idea with a fundamental concern towards society, the environment and humanities.

A FRIEND IN NEED IS A FRIEND INDEED

My favourite quote: “
There are painters who transform the sun to a yellow spot, but there are others who with the help of their art and their intelligence, transform a yellow spot into sun” – Pablo Picasso.
